Nannie's Homemade Red Velvet Cake

Red Velvet Cake
1/2 C Shortening
1 1/2 C Sugar
Cream these two together.
Add 2 Eggs.
Make paste with 2 Tbl Cocoa and 2 small bottles (or one large bottle) of Red Food Coloring. Add this to the above mixture.
Mix 1 tsp Salt and 1 tsp Vanilla to 1 C of Buttermilk; add alternately with 2 1/2 C of Flour.
Mix 1 1/2 tsp Vinegar and 1 tsp Soda - fold into cake - DO NOT beat.
Pour into 2, 9" round cake pans - use shortening and flour in pans before pouring cake mixture.
Bake at 350' for 30-45 minutes.

Icing
Cook until thick - 1 C Milk and 5 Tbl Flour. Stir constantly - let cool until cold.
Cream together: 1 C Sugar, 1 C Butter, 1 tsp Vanilla.
Add to cold flour mixture. Beat until it looks like whipped cream. May look curdy at first, but continue beating until it smooths out.
